Shankhumugam Beach : It is 8 kms away from Thannpanoor, This beach is adjacent to the Thiruvananthapuram  International Airport has an indoor recreation club, the Matsya Kanya ( a Gigantically long sculpture of a mermaid), a restaurant shaped like a starfish and a traffic training park for children are very attractions.

Major Tourist Atrractions

Kovalam Beach : This famous beach is 16 kms away from the city, It's near beaches are Samudra Beach, Ashok Beach, Eve's Beach and Lighthouse Beach - All within short walking distance of each other, provide visitors with their fill of sun, sea and sand. While the beaches to the south of the promontory are more crowded, the north offer ample secluded space for sunbathing, safe swimming in the placid blue waters and water sports. Other places to visit nearby are - Vizhinjam Harbour, Marine Aquarium and Lighthouse.

Vizhinjam Rock Cut Cave : Vizhinjam is a Harbour, it is close to Kovalam Beach, there are rock-cut sculptures of the 18th century in the cave temple at Vizhinjam. The granite cave here encloses a one-celled shrine with a loose sculpture of Vinandhara Dakshinamurthi. The outer wall of the cave depicts half complete relics of the Hindu God Shiva with Goddess Parvathy.

Chowara Beach : The beach at South Kovalam (Chowara) is more private (Sumatheeram) and most of the Best Ayurvedic Resorts are located on this beach.

Neyyar Dam : 32 kms from Thiruvananthapuram, a popular picnic spot, Neyyar Dam has a watch tower, crocodile farm, lion safari park and deer park. Boating facilities are available at the reservoir.

Padmanabhapuram Palace : 63 kms from Thiruvananthapuram, located in Tamil Nadu, on the way to Kanyakumari situated at Thuckalai, the seat of the rulers of Travancore. This is a well-preserved wooden palace, a glorious testimony to the traditional Kerala School of architecture. The extraordinary murals, exquisite floral carvings and the black glossy granite floor have withstood the test of time. (Closed on Mondays).

Koyikkal Palace : Located at Nedumangad 18 kms from Thiruvananthapuram, on the way to the Ponmudi hill station and the waterfalls, this ancient palace dates back (to the 15th century. Here you can see a double storied traditional Nalukettu building with slanting gabled roofs, an inner courtyard and museums of folklore and numismatics set up by the Department of Archeology.

Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary : This sanctuary 50 kms from Thiruvananthapuram, on the way to Ponmudi, spread over 53 kms on the Western Ghats has its rich flora and fauna with hillocks, forest and eucalyptus plantations.

Ponmudi : This place is above sea level has a deer park and excellent trekking trails.

Sree Chitra Art Gallery This art gallery located near the Napier Museum here displays among others, select ed paintings of Raja Ravi Varma, Svetiova and Nicholase Roerich and painting works of Rajput, Mughal, Tanjore, China, Japan, Tibet and Bali. (Open : 1000 - 1700 hrs. Closed on Mondays & Wednesday forenoons)

The Zoological Park : It is one of the first zoological park in India, well planned Botanical Garden. Here you can see a reptile house with different species of snakes. (Open : 1000 - 1700 hrs. Closed on Mondays. & Wednesday forenoons)

The Kanakakunnu Palace : The palace and its sprawling grounds are today the venue for many cultural meets and programmes.

Science and Technology Museum Complex : The exhibits here are related to science, technology and electronics. (Open : 1000 - 1700 hrs. Closed on Mondays.)

Observatory: Located at the highest point in the city, near the Museum complex 60 meters above sea level, one can have a bird's eye view of the city from here.

Attukal Devi Temple : This temple is 3 kms away from East Fort and it's known as women's Sabarimala.

Veli Tourist Village : This picnic spot, where Lake meets the Arabian sea, offers boating facilities. Pedal boats and paddle boats can be hired to explore the charms of the Lagoon in a leisurely manner. For a quick ride over the waters, speedboats are available for hire. Children enjoy climbing over the huge sculptures which dot the landscape. (Open : 0800 - 1800 hrs)

Akkulam Tourist Village : This is another picnic spot with boating facilities, children's park and swimming pool.

The Napier Museum : It was built in the 19th century in Indo­ Saracenic structure boasts a natural air conditioning system and house a rare collection of archaeological and artifacts, bronze idol, ancient ornaments temple and ivory carvings. (Open : 1000 - 1700 hrs. Closed on Mondays & Wednesday forenoons)

Varkala : Here important places to visit are Varkala Beach and 2000 year old Sree Janardhana temple. The final resting place of the great social reformer, Sree Narayana Guru, is near Varkala, atop a hill called Sivagiri. High cliffs with mineral springs rise majestically from the coastline. According to a myth, sage Narada was approached by a group of mendicants who confessed to having sinned. Narada threw his valkkalann (cloth made of the bark of a tree) into the air, and the place where it landed was subsequently named Varkala, The mendicants were directed hy Narada to offer their prayers in the newly created place by the. seashore. The place where they prayed for redemption came to be known as the Papanasham Beach (Papanasham means redemption from sins).
