Nilambur: On the Kozhikode-Ooty highway, 40 kms from Malappuram, this is an important halting place for tourists on route to Ooty, a trading centre in hill products and is well known for its teak plantations, said to the oldest in the world (Connolly's plot) and a well designed Teak Museum, which traces the history and uses of the wonder wood.

Malappuram : The land stands at the entrance to the Malabar region, and is crossed by three major rivers - the Chaliyar, the Kadalundi and the Bharathapuzha. Malappuram is also an important seat of both Hindu and Islamic earnings. Here important place is Kerala 's pioneering Ayurvedic institution is at Kottakat 12 kms southwest of Malappuram town. It was started in 1902.

Major Tourist Attractions

Kottakunnu Fort : One can see trace of an old fort at the base of the cantonment Hill. The fort was the first to be built by the Zamorins of Kozhikode.

Valiya Alma Masjid Malappuram : This is an important pilgrim centre of the Muslims of Kerala. The four day annual festival at the mosque (nercha) is celebrated in April. Adjoining the mosque is the mausoleum of the Malappuram shaheeds whose brave exploits have been immortalized in the Mappila ballads.

Tirurangadi: Tirurangadi was an important centre of the Khilapath movement, national movement and the Malabar Rebellion. It was the Tirurangadi incident on 20th August, 1921, that ignited the out break of Mappila Rebellion.

Tirur: This place is 32 kms southwest of Malappuram and 43 kms from Kozhikode, birth place the father of Malayalam literature, Tunchat Ramanuja Ezhuthachan (He wrote Ramayanam Kilipat in Malayalam).

Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary: Located 19 kms from Kozhikode about 7 kms from Beypore port, the sanctuary which is spread over a cluster of islands covers an area surrounded by hillrocks where the Kadalundipuzha flows in to the Arabian sea. Over a 1000 varieties of native birds and over 60 varieties of migratory birds flock here.

Ponnani : Ponnani is the only port in Malappuram district and one of the oldest in Kerala.

Thirunavaya Temple : It is situated near Ponnani, on the banks of the river Bharathapuzha. Holding immense historical importance, this is the place where 'Mamangam', a grand assembly of the rulers of Kerala was held here once every 12 years, in olden times. This festival was held for the last time in 1755 AD. Today, Thirunavaya temple is also a famous pilgrim centre.

Kodikuthimala: Kodikuthimala a scenic hilltop near Perinthalmanna, attracting tourists with it's panoramic views.

Adyaripara: Adyanpara lies in the village of Nilambur taluk and is famous for its waterfalls and the splendor of its wooded jungles.
