Peermade : It is on the way from Kottayam to Thekkadi (National park) route. It is surrounded by tea, rubber and cardamom plantations. It can be a pleasant brief halt.

Kottayam : Kottayam is known for its religious harmony. There are over 50 temples and 70 churches including a 1000 year old mosque in this district. Besides, Kottayam is the gateway to the pilgrim centres of Sabarimala, Vaikom, Ettumanoor, Bharanangpnam, Erumeli, Manarcad, Aruvithura, Athirampuzha. Thirunakkara Mahadeva temple is in the heart of the Kottayam city and Kumaranallur Bhagavathi temple are very famous. There are two ferry stations near Kottayam town.

Mannanam St. Joseph's Monastery : The church situated near Medical College, was built by the blessed Father Chavara Kuriakose Elias. The mortal remains of this saintly priest is preserved here. St. Joseph Monastery, Mannanam is the Mother House of the CMI Congregation, foundation stone of which was laid on 11 May 1831. It’s a great pilgrimage centre.

Jama Masjid at Thazhathangadi : This Masjid is 2 kms from Kottayam town an ancient mosque on the banks of the Meenachil iver is believed to be 1000 years old. It is one of the oldest Jama Masjid in India.

Manarcad St. Mary's Church : The ancient practice of 8 day fast and the Feast of Virgin Mary's Birth are celebrated between September 1st and 8th of every year at the cathedral. The church was rebuilt on several occasions including during the 16th century when all churches in India were rebuilt in the Portuguese style. The traditional lamps lit around this cross by devotees are a peculiarity of the church. Devotees used to move around the cross on their knees after bathing in a pond. Psychiatric patients and chronically diseased patients praying beneath the cross for the restoration of their health is a common phenomena.

Ettumanur Temple : This Lord Shiva temple is 12 kms north of Kottayam, has beautiful murals, similar to those found at Mattancherry palace in Kochi.

Vaikom Temple : This is another Lord Shiva temple is located 40 kms northwest of Kottayam, is famous for its grand elephant pageants and traditional dance performances.

Wagamon : 60 kms from Kottayam town, this hill station, at (devation of 1100 meters above the sea level is a major attraction. It is on the Idukki - Kottayam border. The breeding cattles of the Kerala Livestock Board is located here.

Bharanganam St. Mary's Church : It is an Internationally important pilgrim center in Kottayam district. This church is 5 kms from Pala. The mortal remains of Sister Alphonsa who died on 28 July 1946, is kept here.

Kumarakom : Kumarakom is a popular  tourist destination at Kottayam. This is famous for its backwater tourism. Kumarakom is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna. Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is a home for many species of migratory birds visit. The Vemabanad Lake, the largest freshwater Lake in the state is habitat for many marine and freshwater fish species and it teems with Karimeen, shrimp, prawns etc.

Poonjar Palace : The palace is a glorious testimony to the  regal opulence of a bygone era. Within the palace walls is an extraordinary royal collection of antiques and exquisite furnitures, huge chandeliers, jewel boxes, different varieties of lamps, dancing Lord Shiva, grain measures, Mollies and weapons. A unique conch preserved here is taken once a year for ritualistic purposes.
