Thenmala Plantation : This place is a marvelous tourist destination covered  by forest, rubber and tea plantations, and this place Is selected by World Tourism Organisation as one of the world's  best eco-friendly tourism projects.

Kollam, also called Quilon, is a historic town with 30% covered by the renowned Ashtamudi Lake.  Kollam is boredered by Arabian Sea on one side. Kollam was  one of the earliest sea ports on the western side of India. Kollam had a trade links and maintained close commercial relationships with the  Arabs, Jews, Greeks, Egyptians, Romans and all the European colonial powers including the Portuguese, Dutch and the British. The major export items from Kollam in those days included spices, pearls, diamonds, timber and silk among others.  The Neendakara Harbour is one of the largest harbor and an important fishing center in Kerala.  The eight hour boat trip between Kollam and Alappuzha is an enhanting experience. Sasthamkotta Lake, the largest fresh water lake in Kerala situvates here in Kollam.

Major Tourist Attractions

Ashtamudi Lake: Ashtamudi Lake, literally having eight arms, is the second largest backwater in Kerala. It covers a major portion of the Kollam district. Kettuvallam (traditional boat) is an amazing spectacle in the world.

Neendakara Bridge: Neendakara is the Headquarters of the Indo-Norwegian Fisheries Community project, which was established in 1953.

Thangassery : The chief attraction of the place is the light house, built in 1902. Thangassery was an enclave of the Portuguese, Dutch and British in succession. The 144 ft.light house stands as a warning seamen of the treacherous reefs of Thangassery.

Paravoor : This is a narrow skirt of land stretching in between the backwaters and the sea. A beach resort by KTDC and a major water sports complex by Kollam DTPC will adorn this place very soon. The famous Varkala beach is a mere 15 kms drive from here.

Oachira : The peculiarity of the Oachira  temple here is that there is no temple building as such nor is there any idol. All classes of people worship the presiding deity the Parabrahmam. Oachira draws thousands of Pilgrims for Oachirakkali, a festival held annually in June.

Pathanapuram : An important trading center on the banks of the Kallada river, Pathanapuram is 13 kMs away from Punalur. The Chandanakkudam mahotsavam of the mosque there, celebrated every year in February-March attracts thousands of devotees.

Jatayu Rock : The Jatayu Rock is a huge rock situated in the Chadaya Mangalam village on MC Road. The name Jatayu  a giant bird, comes from the epic - Ramayana. For the adventurous at heart, the place is ideal for trekking.

Palaruvi Waterfalls : Palaruvi means stream of milk which makes its way down which falls steeply down into a small shallow pool which is ideal for swimming. It shows its mightiness during the monsoons and mostly dries up in the midst of summer. It is the 40th highest river falls when counted among Indian waterfalls and 3rd highest among the list of Kerala Waterfalls. The waterfalls is  inside the forests near Aryankavu, Kollam.

Matha Amrithanandamayi Ashram : Situated at Amrithapuri near Vallikavu, is the residence and headquarters of Matha Amrithanandamayi Devi, The ashram is accessible both by road and boat. Picnic Village, located at Ashramam, along the backwater front, is the main centre of recreational activities in Kollam. A 200 year old Government Guest House, and Adventure Park, a Tourist Boat Club, a Children's Traffic Park and a Yatri Nivas all housed in this vast tourist complex.
