Nelliyampathy : The hill station is at a height of 467 to 1572 meters above the sea level. The breathtaking evergreen forests of the Sahya Ranges, Seethakundu at Nelliyampathy offers a panoramic view of about one third of Palakkad.

 

 

Palakkad

Palakkad situated at the base of the Western Ghats is known as Rice Bowl of Kerala .It has acres of paddy fields and accounts for the major production of rice in Kerala.  Groundnut, black gram, coconut, cotton, ragi, pepper, banana, cashew, sugarcane, pea etc are also grown abundantly in the district. It is known as granary of Kerala as over 63% of its area is dedicated for cultivation. Palakkad has highest number of dams in the state and the water from the dam is mainly used to irrigate large tracts of agricultural land and this account for the substantial production of agricultural crops. The main places to visit are Tipu's Fort which was built by Haider Ali of Mysore in 1766, The Lord Vishwanatha temple on the banks of Kalpathy river which is famous for its chariot procession, temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu on the banks of Papanashiniriver at Tirunelly etc.

Major Tourist Attractions

Silent Valley : The Silent Valley spread over an area of 89sqkms, is the country's last substantial stretch of virgin tropical evergreen rainforest. Its an important part of the Nilgiri biosphere. The park renowned for its rare plants and herbs, which include over 100 species of orchards. Wildlife includes tigers, elephants, the Nilgirilangur and the sloth bear.

Malampuzha Dam : On the outskirts of Palakkad town is the extensive Malampuzha Dam and Gardens, across the Malampuzha river. Pleasant boat cruises are possible on the lake, nestling in the foothills. Boating and fishing facilities are also available. Pedal boats, water scooters and motor boats can be hired from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. Fresh Water Aquarium, Snake Park, Children's Park etc are the main attractions. The Passenger Ropeway, is the first time of its kind in south India (Accessible to visitors from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm & 2:30 pm to 8:00 pm). Road train trips in the garden (8 am to 8 pm). Telescope tower (10 am to 5 pm) etc are other attractions.

SmritiVanam : The park is located at a distance of 22 kms from Palakkad. J.P. SmritiVanam located at Walayar, on the border of Kerala and Tamil Nadu, extends to about 100 acres. You can conduct a Safari ride here and see deers, elephants and other animals moving freely.

Mayiladumpara Peacock Sanctuary : It is well known for its grove abounding in Peacocks. The National bird of India, Peacock, has got a sanctuary of its own in this part of the country.

Attappady : A beautiful synthesis of mountains, rivers and forests. This is the habitat of many tribes like Irular,Mudugar and Kurumbar. The Malleeswaran peak is worshipped as a gigantic SivaLinga by the Adivasis (tribals)  who also celebrate the Sivaratri festival with great fervor.

Parambikulam : This Wildlife sanctuary is home to rare wild animals.
